Common Purpose — ASEAN Young Leader Program 2018

Hello … Annyeong haseyo … Ni Hao … Sawaddi Ka … Bonjour .. Ohayou ..

Perkenalakan Nama saya Indah Gustri Rahayu, biasanya di pangil Indah saja

My name is Indah you can call me Indah

Are you concerned about why I greet with various language?

Ok, I know English, a bit Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, and Thailand Language because

I have great experiences a few days ago from 30th October until 2nd November. I join the event from “COMMON PURPOSE — ASEAN YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM “ in Singapore it talkS about “How can young leaders make ASEAN more resilient and innovative ?” So, more than 10 countries join this program and the most make me excited is when I met a lot of people that I never met before. I got new friends, new experiences, new knowledge, new ideas and we can share each other about anything especially about culture because we are from different countries, different backgrounds, different languages, and different mindsets.

Talking about culture, have you ever travel to another country and get new friends? and did you get new experiences? and How do you feel? it’s amazing, right? Ok, good people let me tell you a little bit about the story of my experience yesterday. And I have new knowledge because my friends from another country in ASEAN tell me about their culture and now I can compare my culture and what the differences. I am very interested in culture because the culture is very unique, complex, abstract, and broad. Not only about that many aspects of culture determine communicative behavior but also culture is like identity every country you will find many wonderful aspects like differences in every person, food, religion, custom, city, language, mindset, clothing, buildings, works of art, and many more, as well as culture, is an identity part of every country.

For example, When I spoke to a friend from the Philippines I learn some words for example I can count 1 to 5 in the Tagalog language “ Isa … Dalawa … Tatlo … apat … lima … “ it’s similar to Indonesia language right ? and then when I spoke with my friends from Indonesia using Indonesia language and my friend form Philippines didn’t understand so I change my language to be English. Ok let’s move on from number and now it’s about a culture of mutual respect intolerance between religions I have a roommate her name is Emmy she is from Cambodia her religion is Buddha and she is really tolerance in my religion, for example, she always asks me “ Have you prayed ?” “ don’t eat this it’s pork ?” after that I answer “ No, I am still getting period in my religion if women getting period they forbidden to take a pray and I can’t eat pork “ I explain a little bit about my culture religion and she understands. then when the night before we slept she want to pray in our room with sembahyang I appreciated her religion didn’t make a sound noisy. Besides language and religion, I have once again about the behavior culture in Singapore. Singapore is the most developed city in the ASEAN. Singapore always growth every day, it is balanced with awareness the society start from discipline about something more important like; waste the rubbish in the garbage, before they walk in the crosswalk they waiting in the traffic light witting the instruction, using public transportation, and many positive things we can apply. when I went around to Singapore and my friend from Singapore was surprised why I always tired when I walking ? and I always search chair to sit in MRT or Bus. To be honest I am not usual to walk moreover I seldom using public transportation. I always using a motorcycle if I want to go someplace. I think it’s some of my story about “Building mutual respect in multicultural society” based on my experiences that I ever know.

However not only learning about a new culture but also I can learn about how to respect it and keep the culture look different but still can balance. Although we are different cultures We are ASEAN we are one not Indonesian, not Philippine, not Cambodia, not Singapore, not Thailand, or others. We must save our culture because the culture is the identity of every county and the bridge of togetherness.

Sincerely

😊
